Kind 201 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel developed to conserve nickel. It is a cost-effective alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301 and 304. Nickel in Type 201 is replaced by manganese and nitrogen, offering a lower-cost option without compromising performance.
While Type 201 is non-hardenable by thermal treatment, it can be cold-worked to achieve high tensile strengths. In its annealed condition, Type 201 is essentially non-magnetic but becomes magnetic when cold worked. Type 201 stainless steel is a versatile austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy developed as a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like Type 301 and 304. It features a chemical composition with 16-18% chromium, 3.5-5.5% nickel, 5.5-7.5% manganese, and up to 0.25% nitrogen. This alloy is known for its high tensile strength of approximately 505 MPa and yield strength of 275 MPa, while maintaining good elongation properties at 40% min in 50 mm. Type 201 is essentially non-magnetic in its annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. It offers a density of 7.93 g/cm³ and thermal conductivity of 16.2 W/m·K, making it proper for various applications where corrosion resistance, strength, and cost-effectiveness are key.
